Often called the “Polar Bear Maternity Ward" for having the largest density of denning polar bears in the world, Wrangel Island averages between 350 to 400 dens each year. Enjoy viewing mother Polar Bears and cubs on the ice floes, island cliffs and over spectacular tundra landscapes on all of our Wrangel Island expeditions.

A must-see for explorers, Wrangel Island is home to an abundance of wildlife – Polar Bears, Walrus, Arctic foxes, Whales, large colonies of seabirds and seals. Located 140 kilometers north of Siberia and spanning 7,600-square-kilometers, Wrangel Island is accessible only by expedition cruise. Untouched by glaciers during the last Ice Age, this UNESCO World Heritage site looks much as they did in the Pleistocene epoch when Woolly Mammoths roamed.

Mountains dominate most of central and eastern Chukotka, providing a magnificent backdrop for our expeditions. This terrain provides an ideal environment to see wild bears and many marine mammals including various species of whales and Walrus. Chukotka is also home to several isolated villages with warm local hospitality.

At Heritage Expeditions, we have a long-standing relationship with the Russian Far East, having explored this remote region since 1993. Each day is an epic adventure of discovery: Watch rambling polar bear cubs and feeding whales from the vantage of your Zodiac. Cruise along massive cliffs abounding with seabirds, visit isolated villages and hike across sweeping tundra landscapes. Whether you’re a birder, photographer, wildlife enthusiast, or simply an adventurous spirit, these expeditions offer an unparalleled wilderness experience.
